Irish Fish Canners

Proiseail (An Clochan Liath) Teoranta, trading as Irish Fish Canners, first opened its doors as a fish canning factory in September, 1977. An ambitious local entrepreneur Michael J. Bonner purchased the company in 1988 while it was operating on a three-day working week. Michael’s vision for the business was to provide sustainable jobs within the local community by utilizing what nature provided, premium quality fish from the sustainable cold clear waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. That’s a vision he successfully achieved and built upon.

Michael’s established background in sales of pelagic fish helped him secure UN Food-Aid contracts, supplying premium quality, locally caught and canned mackerel to an international market. Following Michael’s untimely passing in 1993 the company remained within the Bonner family and still does. Irish Fish Canners is a 100% family owned and run business with family members working within the company.

Irish Fish Canners is a world leader in fish canning. Our unique location ensures us access to the world’s finest fish and that has played a key role in the evolution of the business into a major canned seafood provider to a number of international leading brands operating in global markets.

Recognised and supported by our loyal customer base, Irish Fish Canners is predominately a co-packing business for market leader John West spanning more than over 35 years. Our dedicated workforce, many of whom have been with the company since its inception, Irish Fish Canners continues to supply markets with premium quality, canned fish products both domestically and internationally.

In 2015, Irish Fish Canners launched its own range of premium quality canned mackerel under the Irish Atlantic Canned Fish brand.

Our objective is to ensure the longevity and sustainability of our business for the future generations. Our ambitious commitment to sustainability has been recognised and supported by Bord Bia’s Origin Green Sustainability Program.

Bringing the finest pelagic fish in the world from pier to packaging in just eight hours makes us a world leader in our industry.

Our dedication to transporting prime herring, mackerel and pilchards from sea to shelf in the fastest time possible means fish lovers around the world can enjoy unrivalled freshness in canned products.

Processing takes place just yards from the cold, clear waters of the North Atlantic and this ensures we can lock in the full flavour of freshness in double-quick time.

Uniquely located along the famous ‘Wild Atlantic way’, Irish Fish Canners is the only fish canning facility in Ireland – providing close proximity to the most prime catch in all the oceans of the world.

Our location in North West County Donegal, beside Ireland’s largest deep sea fishing port of Killybegs, guarantees fresh fish supply throughout the seasons.

Our place on the map sets us apart from other canning facilities throughout the world because our fish are always in prime condition.

The wild Atlantic fishing grounds are on our doorstep which means the fish we catch have achieved ideal fat content for the canning process by the time they have migrated from arctic waters to the shelf edge off the coast of Ireland.
